Do your female characters have to be “likeable” to be interesting? Male protagonists are often allowed to be deeply flawed on the page, making choices that hurt others and are deemed irresponsible or selfish. But what about deeply flawed female protagonists? Why do we see less of them and how do we go about writing them? This class will use a blend of in class readings, exercises, and group discussion to advance students’ ability to write female characters with depth and nuance who defy stereotypes.
